At the Australian 2020 Summit in 2008, Aboriginal Designer Alison Page promoted the engagement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Artists with the manufacturing sector to create authentic design products for domestic and international markets. The Certificate IV in Design was delivered at Lismore Campus, TAFE, NSW in 2010. This Blog site showcases some of the students work and their stories from the Great Lakes Campus. The project was funded and supported by The North Coast Aboriginal Learning Partnerships unit and the Faculty of Information Technology and Creative Industries from North Coast TAFE and the Federal Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

Yili’ as a Brand
Yili Design is the marketing identity and brand logo of the 2010 Certificate IV Indigenous Design group studying at the Art and Design School, Great Lakes TAFE. We acknowledge the Worimi people, past and present, the traditional custodians of the land we learn on. We also acknowledge and pay respects to the Worimi elders, past and present. Yili is a ‘Kattang’ (Gathang) word meaning leaf, leaves, the bush, Gathang is spoken by the Birrbay (Biripi), Guringay and Warrimay (Worimi) peoples of the Mid North Coast of NSW.
The Yili brand image was created by Cheryl Heikkanen, with the input of the rest of the team with some modifications for the final design.
The students are studying drawing, ceramics, printmaking, computing, and business and design subjects.
The student group are all Indigenous students some from Worimi nation and others are studying away from Country. The stories from their Country and culture are the inspirations for the design work.  The considered designs of the students’ work over the year have progressed into stunning contemporary works. As you look through this blog site you will see the journey of the students and hear their stories.
